As part of Computing Service's sustainability efforts to reduce energy consumption, a printing system has been implemented to monitor printing on campus. Collecting statistics will provide a view of the printing needs of the campus community and may provide insights into methods for reducing waste.
In addition to providing useful statistics, this printing system will allow users to submit print jobs to network printers all over campus from the wireless network or from other buildings.
Browse to print.allegheny.edu to login to the Allegheny College web printing system. Your username and password are the same as your network account used for email and FTP. From here you can review your current status, submit new print jobs, and release print jobs to the printer.

The summary page displays information about the print jobs that you have submitted but have not yet released to a printer and the number of pages to be printed.

To submit a print job click the "Web Print" link on the left side of the page and follow the prompts to choose a printer and upload a document. Click "Submit a Job" to begin.

First you will be given a list of locations on campus with available printers. Select the building you would like to print in and any associated options. Such options include single-sided vs. double-sided printing and color vs. black and white.

On the next screen you will select the number of copies to print.

On the next screen, click Browse to upload your document. Currently this is limited to PDF and Microsoft Office documents. If you need to print another type of document or need special options (printing Power Point handouts for example) there are two workarounds.
Printing from a public computer lab allows you to print using the full range of options that would normally be available on a directly attached printer.
This is often accomplished by installing a PDF print driver. This will allow you to select the PDF writer from your list of printers and a PDF document will be created as a file instead of being sent to a physical printer. For more information see the section called PDF Print Drivers below.

After clicking "Upload and Complete" your document will be uploaded, rendered, and held in the queue. At this point your document has not been printed. You need to release the job to the printer in order to finish. Additionally, you will receive a notification email telling you that your document is being held in the queue. See the section below titled "Jobs Pending Release" to learn how to complete the print job.

Clicking on "Jobs Pending Release" on the left side of the page will show you the print jobs that you have uploaded. From here you can either release the job to be printed or cancel it.

When you click "print" you will be given a list of printers in the building that you selected. Click on the printer that you want to print to and your job will be submitted. Buildings with only a single printer will print to that printer immediately after you click "print".
Your document will then be sent to the queue for that particular printer and will be printed.
Clicking "cancel" will cancel the print job entirely.
Printing from a computer lab will work the same as standard printing. You will be able to submit print jobs via the regular methods such as File → Print. Your print job will then be automatically submitted and released to the selected printer and deduct the appropriate print points from your total.
Because the print job must first be submitted to the print server and then to printer, your print job may take longer than expected to print. This time could be several minutes if there is a high demand and a large queue on the print server.
↑ Back To TopStudents and approved student groups receive 1600 print points at the start of the semester to be used toward printing for that semester.
An image refers to a single printed side of a piece of paper. A page printed on two sides counts as two images. A page printed on only one side counts as one image.
| 3 points per image | duplex B&W printing |
| 4 points per image | non-duplex B&W printing |
| 9 points per image | duplex color printing |
| 10 points per image | non-duplex color printing |
When printing through the web interface print points are deducted when the print job is released.
When printing in a public lab print points are deducted as soon as the print job is submitted.
ASG recognized groups begin each semester with Print Points just like regular users. Student groups are able to log in using the username and password associated with their group's email address.
Print Points are deducted from the user that is currently logged on. If you wish to print a document that will be charged to the group's printing balance, you must submit the job using the group's username. This can be done through the web print interface at print.allegheny.edu or directly from a lab computer if you log on with your group's username. If you log on to the computer with your own username and password, any print jobs will be charged to your account.
To review the remaining balance of your Print Points, click on "Jobs Pending Release" on the left side of the page. This page will display your remaining points whether you have a pending job or not.

To request additional Print Points, first go to Web Help Desk and login with your network account username and password.

After logging in you will be shown your Web Help Desk history. Click on "Request" in the top navigation bar to show the request form.

In the "Request Type" drop down menu, select "Additional Print Points". Click "Save" to submit your request. If you want to enter any additional details about the request, enter it in the "Request Detail" field.

If you have fewer Print Points than your print job requires, it will be denied when you attempt to release the job to a printer. The image below shows the error that you will receive.

You should also check your email because the printing system will issue a notification email if your print job was denied. This notification email will give you a detailed reason for your print job being denied, whether it was for insufficient Print Points or another reason.
If you need to request additional Print Points, see the section above titled Requesting Additional Print Points.
If you have fewer Print Points than your print job requires, it will be denied when you attempt to print. You will not receive an error message, but you can check the status of your print job on the Web Print web site. Click on "Recent Print Jobs" on the left side of the page. If the status of your print job is Denied, hover over the word "Denied" and you will see a tool-tip with the reason. The example below shows a print job that was denied due to insufficient Print Points.

↑ Back To TopIn order to print an unsupported document through web print, you can first convert the document to a PDF using a PDF print driver. Two popular PDF writers are:
After installing the print driver, you will have an additional printer available on your system. For example, with CutePDF you can simply click File → Print as you would for a standard printer. Then select CutePDF Writer as the printer, set your desired options, and click Print.

After clicking Print, a Save As dialog will appear. Select the filename and location then click Save. CutePDF will generate a PDF document which you can then upload using Web Print.
