Working with Filters in Eudora Pro

Filters are a programmed series of actions upon a specific set of e-mail messages.

Following is some general information about using Filters. See also our tutorials on using filters to send an out-of-office message and using filters to reply by subject to incoming messages.

To create and modify filters, first open the Filters Window by clicking Tools > Filters:

This is the Filters Window. To create a new Filter, click New:

Section A is where all the filters you create will be listed. Whenever you what to modify a filter, click on the filter name on the left to display the filter settings on the right. **Note: The filter is not named by you, but automatically named according to the actions you specify for that filter.

The upper Match Area, containing B, C, D, E, F, and G, designates when and which e-mail messages the filter should act upon.

The lower Action Area, containing H and I, designates what action(s) the filter should perform when the occurrence specified in the Match Area happens.

The Filter Window shown below gives an example of a filter. The filter is setup to look for any incoming e-mail messages being sent from Announcements (except for those with a subject containing "Dave McInally"), and then the filter will automatically transfer these messages to the Announcements mailbox.

To activate a filter which was designated manual in section B of the Match Area, click on the Special Menu, and then click Filter Messages.

You can also setup your filter to automatically keep a record, or Filter Report, of all actions the filter has done. To program Eudora Pro to record filter actions:

  1. click on the Tools Menu
  2. click Options
  3. click Getting Attention Icon on the left-hand side of the Options Window Screen Shot
    Make sure the selection to Generate filter Report is checked. Click OK.

To see a Filter Report, click Tools > Filter Report, or click the Filter Report Tab located at the bottom of the window.

This is where the filter actions are recorded. Information given in the report changes according to the type of action the filter does.
