Accessing your Account Files through FTP

To access your account from your personal computer you need an internet connection and an FTP (File Transfer Protocal) program. Windows users can download the free Core FTP Lite and Mac users can download the ftp program, Fetch, also free for educational users.

When connecting to your account, use the chart below to determine the proper Host or Server name.

*gator2.allegheny.edu and gator4.allegheny.edu will still work. They have been setup to redirect to gator5.allegheny.edu.

Connecting to your Allegheny account using Core FTP Lite

Start Core FTP Lite. This can be done by clicking Start > Programs > Core FTP > Core FTP Lite. In the Site Manager window that opens, enter a name for the new site you are creating. This name can be anything you like. Use the chart above to determine the proper entry for Host / IP/ URL . Enter your Allegheny username in the Username box and your email/ftp password in the Password box. Click Connect.

Files and folders on your computer will display in the left pane of the Core FTP window. Files and folders in your Allegheny account will display in the right pane. To display your My Documents folder in the left pane, click the Directory Tree icon above the list of your local computer files.

Select My Documents in the Local window that opens and click OK.

To send a copy of a file from your local computer to your Allegheny account, select the file and click the right-pointing arrow above the list of local files.

Similarly, to send a copy of a file from your Allegheny account to your local computer, select the file and click the left-pointing arrow above the list of files in your Allegheny account.

You can browse files and folders in your account by double-clicking a folder to see what is in that folder. To move back out of the folder, click the Up Directory icon above the list of files.

To delete a folder in your account, right-click on the folder in the Allegheny account pane, and select Delete.

Click Yes in the confirmation window to confirm that you want to delete the folder and all files in it.

To disconnect from your account, click File > Disconnect.
