Students accounts for http://print.allegheny.edu were updated with 1600 new print points in early August. The new points were added to the balance of points that students had at that point. It is expected that 1600 points per semester with the ability to roll-over unused points will limit the need for students to request additional points mid-semester. Students needing additional print points can request them by completing a ticket at http://webhelp.allegheny.edu.
After evaluating print point usage from last semester, it was clear that 1600 points for the semester met the typical student's printing needs. Students that needed additional points were typically upperclassmen and more likely seniors or juniors in writing intensive majors. After considering the options, it was decided to continue with the 1600 print point allocation per semester and roll over points from the previous semester. Depending on how this plan works for the coming semester a cap of the number of print points that a student can roll over from the previous semester might be set at 3200. It is not clear at this point if such a cap will be necessary but it is an option. Should you have questions about this or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at jfadden@allegheny.edu feed back is always appreciated.
Beginning last May, Computing Services implemented a new system for creating user names. (Please note: This does not affect existing user names.) As of May, all new faculty and employee user names are the employee’s first initial followed by the entire last name. User names for incoming students are the entire last name followed by the first initial of the first name. In both cases, digits are added at the end if needed to create a unique name. We are no longer creating dot email aliases (e.g., john.smith@allegheny.edu) since they do not work well with Google Apps and some other online tools. All existing dot email addresses will continue to work as they have in the past, however. Continuing employees who want to have the dot email address associated with their account deleted can contact Computing Services to have that done.
