D2L Discussion - 12/5/2006

Today we discuss the Desire2Learn platform.

James Facilitated the discussion starting with the questions -

Which tool impressed you?

Which tool was a cool idea but missed?

Please feel free to comment on your take of the meeting using comments.

I like the overall look and functionality of D2L. I liked that I could easily (with a small bit of work) import events exported from a WebCT calendar into it. I liked the discussion tool a lot.

I found that an import of a WebCT course failed. That was a disappointment, though maybe if I were an administrator there may have been something I could do about it.

I was confused (still am) about how to use the syllabus tool. It may just be a matter of education. I am disappointed that there don't seem to be Help links all over the place.

I'm also concerned that the Edit Course link went away when we enlarged the text in Firefox. Perhaps this is a browswer support issue, and we should take a look at the course in other browsers.

Overall, I like it better than Moodle. I think it's a step forward from the version of WebCT we are currently using, and that faculty will also think so (and hopefully, then, feel that a switch is worth the effort).

Impressive tool - Discussion boards, I like the ease of creating, rearranging, and html blocks for each forum and topic. A second place is the tabs in all of the setting pages.

Tool the Missed - I the blog tool is not easy to find/use, but I have changed my opinion on the widget. With a little education on what, how, and why the create a widget tool is usable given all of the services that use javascript to repackage webcontent as widgets.
